Cool Thing of the Month

Stealth Switch

The Stealthswitch
Clever little gadget, the Stealthswitch. It's a "desktop cloaking device." The footswitch goes under your desk and plugs into your computer's USB or PS2 port. When the pointy-haired boss suddenly "pops in for a chat," a quick tap of your foot instantly removes all non-work-related items from your screen. The only thing he'll see is that Excel spreadsheet you were supposed to be working on. After your "chat," when the PHB moves on to "supervise" somebody else, another quick tap brings back your games, instant messenger window, and web browser (with who knows what sordid web site you were perusing on company time.)

Before you get the wrong idea, let's be clear about this. I don't condone goofing off massively at work. But hey, your lunch hour belongs to you. If you want to give the impression that you're "all work and no play," who am I to withhold information about this useful gizmo from you? I'll tell you about it. It's up to you to decide whether you'll use it for good or evil.

Luckily for me, I am the boss, so my reasons for using the Stealthswitch have more to do with maintaining confidentiality of the documents and reports I'm working on when "visitors" stop by. Available at Cyberguys. $30.
